Needles:

Bamboo or DAISY Needles
Needles US size 7 (4.5 mm)
Notions: 4 (4, 5) buttons 1/2” diameter, 2 stitch holders
Gauge: 20 sts and 26 rows = 4" in Diamond Stitch pattern using size 7 needles. Be sure to work a gauge swatch.
Abbreviations: BO-bind off; CC-contrast color; CO-cast on; Dec-decrease; K-knit; MC-main color; patt-pattern; P-purl; rem-remain(ing); rep-repeat; RS-right side; st(s)-stitches; WS-wrong side.
Body
Using CC, CO 113 (125, 137) sts. Work 8 rows as follows:
Seed Stitch (odd number of stitches)
All rows: K1, *P1, K1; rep from * to end of row.
Change to MC, begin working rows 1-16 of Diamond Chart, begin with st 3 (1, 3)
on Chart; work to st 10, then work 8 st rep; 12 (13, 15) times then work sts
19-27 (19-29, 19-27). Work until piece measures 6 1/2 (6 3/4, 7 1/2) ” from CO
edge, end after working WS row.
Divide for Front and Back
Work across 28 (32, 36) sts for right front, place sts on holder; work across 57
(61, 65) sts for back; without working, place last 28 (32, 36) sts for left
front on holder.
Back Armhole Shaping
Working on 57 (61, 65) sts for back, continue in patt as established. Work 1 row
even.
BO 5 (6, 6) sts at begin of next 2 rows; work BO sts into patt as established—47
(49, 53) sts. Continuing to work from Chart, work until armhole measures 4 1/2
(5, 5 1/2)”, end after working WS row.
Neck and Shoulder Shaping
Working both sides at the same time; work 13 (13, 14) sts; join 2nd ball of
yarn, BO 21 (23, 25) sts for neck; work rem 13 (13, 14) sts. Work one row even.
BO all sts.
Right Front Armhole Shaping
WS facing, place 28 (32, 36) sts from right front holder onto needles. Join
yarn, continuing to work in patt as established, BO 5 (6, 6) sts at beg of
row—23 (26, 30) sts. Work even until armhole measures 1 (1, 1 1/2)”, end after
working WS row.
Neck and Shoulder Shaping
Dec 1 st at begin of next row (neck edge); every other row 9 (12, 12) times and
every row 0 (0, 3) times—13 (13, 14) sts. Work even until armhole measures same
as back. BO all sts.
Left Front Armhole Shaping
RS facing, place 28 (32, 36) sts from left front holder onto needles. Join yarn,
work 2 rows even. BO 5 (6, 6) sts at begin of next row—23 (26, 30) sts. Work
same as for right front; reverse all shaping.
Sleeves
Using CC, CO 33 (41, 41) sts. Work 8 rows Seed stitch same as for
body. Change to MC, begin working rows 1-16 of Diamond Chart, begin with st 3 on
Chart, work to st 10; work 8 st rep (2, 3) times; then work sts 19-27; AT THE
SAME TIME Inc 1 st at each end every 6 (8, 6) rows 6 (5, 8) times —47 (51, 57)
sts, working all increased sts into patt as established. Work even until sleeve
measures 8 3/4 (9, 10 1/2)” from CO edge. BO all sts.
Collar and Button/Buttonhole Bands
Note: Collar and bands are worked in one piece.
Using CC; CO 43 (45, 47) sts. Work in seed stitch until piece measures 4 (4, 4
1/2)” from CO edge; end after working WS row.
Collar Neck Shaping
Working both sides at the same time Work across 11 sts as established, join 2nd
ball of yarn; BO 21(23, 25) sts, work rem sts as established. Dec 1 st at each
neck edge every 4 rows 6 (5, 4) times and every 6 rows 0 (1, 2) times; end after
working WS row—5 sts rem on each piece. Place last 5 sts on holder. Working on 5
sts. Work 2 (3, 0) rows even. Work bands as follows:
Right band (Buttonhole girl)
Row 1 (buttonhole): K1, K2tog, YO, P1, K1.
Rows 2- 14 (Seed Stitch): K1, *(P1, K1) 2 times
Rep rows 1-14, 2 (2, 3) times. Work row 1 and 2 once more.
Work 2 (3, 2) rows even. BO all sts.
Left band (Button band girl)
Place 5 sts from holder onto needles Work 48 (50, 60) rows as follows
All rows: K1, *(P1, K1) 2 times.
BO all sts.
Note: Reverse button and buttonhole band for boy.
Placket
Using CC, CO 15 (15, 17) sts. Work 6 (6, 8) rows Seed st. BO.
Finishing
Shoulder Seams. Sew Collar and bands to sweater. Sew sleeves into
armhole; sew sleeve and side seams. Sew plackets for fronts placing lower edge
of placket 13 (15, 15) rows above MC on lower edge and 5 (7, 7) sts from seam of
front bands, see photo for placement. Sew buttons to button band.
