Roll-Neck Pullover

free knit child's sweater pattern in Merino Wool/Nylon blend

Description:  This child’s pullover features a k1 x p1 ribbed cable against a rev St st background with regular St st rolled cuffs and collar.  And Lofty Wool’s thicker gauge makes it a quick and fun piece to knit.

Level:  Advanced Beginner/Intermediate

Size:  4 (6, 8) yrs

Finished Length (from top of shoulder to bottom, not including rolled St st edge):

Materials:

, 9) – 50g balls Crystal Palace Lofty Wool (Shown in #7102 - Levis, Size 6”)
Crystal Palace Bamboo 26” circular
and 16” circular size #9 (or size needed to obtain gauge)
Cable needle
Yarn needle

Gauge:  4 sts & 5 rows/inch over rev St st

Abbreviations:  beg- beginning; BO- bind off; cn- cable needle; CO- cast on; garter st- When knitting back and forth, knit all rows.  When knitting in the rnd, alternate purl and knit rounds; k- knit; p- purl; patt- pattern; pu- pick up; rem- remaining; rev St st- reverse stockinette stitch (purl on the RS, knit on the WS); rnd- round; RS- right side (outer side of garment); sl- slip; St st- stockinette stitch (knit on RS, purl on WS); st(s)- stitch(es); WS- wrong side (inside of garment)

Instructions: 

Back:
With 26” circular needle
, CO 56 (60, 64) sts.  Work St st (knit on RS, p on WS) for 8 rows, ending with a WS Row.   

Begin cable pattern:
Row 1 (RS): 
k across, inc 2 sts evenly. [58 (62, 66) sts]
Row 2 and all WS rows:  
k18(18, 20), (p1, k1) 2x, p1, k14(16, 16), (p1, k1) 2x, p1, k18(18, 20)
Row 3:
  p18(18, 20), (k1, p1) 2x, k1, p14(16, 16), (k1, p1) 2x, k1, p18(18,20).
Row 5 (cable row):
  p18(18, 20), sl 3 sts onto cn and hold at back of work, k1, p1, then k1, p1, k1 from cn, p14(16, 16), sl 3 sts onto cn and hold at back of work, k1, p1, then k1, p1, k1 from cn, p18(18, 20).
Row 7:
  As Row 3.
Row 9:
  As Row 3.
Repeat Rows 2-9 until piece measures 8.75 (9.5
, 10.25)” from beg, not including rolled St st edge. (Note:  You should have just worked WS Row 46 (50
, 54) of body, not including edge.)

Begin Armhole edge:
BO 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows.  Work 24 rows even in established patt ending with a WS row.  (Note:  Armhole should measure approx. 4.75”) 

Begin Neck Shaping:  (You will work each side of neck separately.  Also, you will continue the established patt in the rem sts while shaping the neck, omitting the cable cross-over.)

Work 16 (17, 19) sts in patt, turn.  BO 2 sts at be of next row (neck edge), work in patt to end of row.  Work 2 more rows even in patt.  BO rem 14 (15, 17) sts at shoulder.   

Join yarn at neck edge on RS row and BO center 16 (18, 18) sts.  Work in patt to end of row.  Work 16 (17, 19) sts in patt, turn.  BO 2 sts at beg of next row (neck edge), work in patt to end of row.  Work 1 row even in patt.  BO rem 14 (15, 17) sts. 

Front:
Work as for back until you have worked 18 rows of armhole, ending with a WS row.  (Note:  Armhole should measure approx. 3.5”) 

Begin Neck Shaping: (You will work each side of neck separately.  Also, you will continue the established patt while shaping the neck, omitting the cable cross-over.)

Work 18 (19, 21) sts in patt, turn.  BO 2 sts at beg of next row (neck edge), work in patt to end of row.  Work 2 rows even in patt.  Work next row in patt, decreasing 1 st at end of row (neck edge).  Work 1 row even in patt.  Work next row in patt, decreasing 1 st at end of row (neck edge).  Continue even in patt until piece measures same size as back. BO rem 14 (15, 17 sts).

Join yarn at neck edge on RS and BO center 12 (14, 14) sts.  Work in patt to end of row.  Work 18 (19, 21) sts in patt, turn.  BO 2 sts at beg of next row (neck edge), work in patt to end of row.  Work 1 row even in patt.  Dec 1 st at beg of next row (neck edge), work in patt to end of row.  Work 1 row even in patt.  Dec 1 st at beg of next row (neck edge), work in patt to end of row. Continue even in patt until same size as back.  BO rem 14 (15, 17 sts).

Sleeves: (make 2)
CO 30 (30, 32) sts. 
Work St st for 8 rows, ending with a WS Row.
Change to rev St st.  Inc 1 st at each end of every 8th row 0 (1
, 7) times, then at each end of every 6th row 7 (7, 0) times, then every 4th row 1 (0, 0) times. [46 sts].  Work 4 (8, 10) rows even, ending with a WS row.  [50, (58, 66) rows, including edge]

Continuing in rev St st, BO 4 st at beg of next 2 rows.  Then BO 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows.  Then dec 1 st at each end of next row.  Work 1 row even.  Dec 1 st at each end of next row.  Work 1 row even.  BO 3 st at beg of next 2 rows.  BO rem 22 sts.

Finishing:
Sew side and shoulder seams.  Sew in sleeves. 

Collar:  With 16” circular needle, PU 12 (14, 14) center front sts, PU 11 sts from side front, PU 4 sts from side back, PU 16 (18, 18) center back sts, PU 4 sts from other side back, PU 11 sts from other side front. [58 (62, 62 sts].  Work St st for 12 rows.  BO loosely.
