Size: 40" diameter, fold in
half to wear.
(but can be knit smaller)
MATERIALS:
Crystal Palace
Panda Silk
(bamboo-SW wool-silk) 5 - 50 gr balls
#3003 color "strawberry cream"
Crystal Palace Circular 26" Bamboo Needles: size 8 or
size to get gauge.
Gauge: 5 sts/inch in Garter stitch. Take time to check
gauge. Note: this gauge is very loose because it is a lace pattern.
Abbreviations:
BO: bind off; Sl 1: slip one stitch knitwise; psso: pass slip st
over; tbl: through back of loop; yo: yarn over
Note from model knitter: Shawl size can easily be
reduced by knitting fewer repeats of border. Because the number of sts in border
is the same in rows 5-8, the last rows are less stretchy and thus increasing the
size would not work as well.]
SHAWL: (beg at center)
Cast on 9 sts using a plain knitted cast on.
Row 1 and all uneven rows: Knit.
Row 2: K1, *yo, k l , rep from *to end ... 17 sts.
Row 4: K1, *yo, k2, rep from *to end ... 25 sts.
Row 6: K1, * yo, k3, rep from * to end ... 33 sts.
Continue increasing in this manner (working one st more between yo's each time)
in alternate rows until the row "K1 , * yo, k29, rep from *to end" has been
worked ... 241 sts.
Next Row: Knit.
Work will measure approximately 8 " from center (beginning).
Work border as follows:
Row 1: (wrong side) K4,*(yo, k1) 5 times, yo, k7, rep from * ending last
rep with k4 instead of
k7 ... 361 sts.
Rows 2, 3, 4: Knit.
Row 5: K1,* (k2 tog) 3 times, (yo, k1) 5 times, yo, (sl 1 , k1 , psso) 3
times, K1, rep from * to end.
Rows 6, 7, 8: Knit.
Rep rows 5 - 8, 15 times total.
[use the K1 stitch marked in bold as a ‘landmark’ stitch with stitch
marker or contrasting loop of yarn].
Next row: Knit.
Next row: K1, * yo, k2 tog, rep from * to end.
Next row: Knit to end, turn, inc 3 sts evenly spaced with K in front &
back of a stitch … 364 sts (# of sts needs to be divisible by 7).
Border will measure approximately 8 inches.
Work lace edging as follows:
Row 1: K2, (yo, k2tog) 2 times, yo, k2, k2 tog, turn.
Row 2: Sl 1, p9.
Row 3: K2, (yo, k2 tog) 2 times, yo, k3, k2 tog, turn.
Row 4: Sl 1, p10
Row 5: K2, (yo, k2 tog) 2 times, yo, k4, k2 tog, turn.
Row 6: Sl 1, p11.
Row 7: K2, (yo, k2 tog) 2 times, yo, k5, k2 tog, turn.
Row 8: Sl 1, p12.
Row 9: K2, (yo, k2 tog) 2 times, yo, k6, k2 tog, turn.
Row 10: Sl 1, p13.
Row 11: K2, (yo, k2 tog) 2 times, yo, k7, k2 tog, turn.
Row 12: Sl 1, p14.
Row 13: BO 6 sts, k7, k2 tog, turn.
Row 14: Sl 1, p8.
Rep rows 1-14 until all shawl sts have been worked off. Pattern will finish on
row 14. Bind off.
Lace edging measures approximately 3.25 " from border to end of a point.
[Note re. BO 6 sts in Row 13 above: Model knitter suggests
using a stretchy bind off: k2, *k2tog tbl, k1, rep from *]
Finishing: Sew edges together to form a circle (do not
make seam too tight; shawl will become
dramatically larger during blocking). Dampen and block flat and pin out to dry.
[An option would be to block first and sew seam as last step.]
