Puffin Baby Boy Blue
Toddler Slipper - Socks
Designed & Knit by Laura Andersson,

These cozy socks are quick to knit and
great for baby's first steps!
Materials:
50 gr. balls
Puffin #0202 "dotty blues"
(See other Puffin colors here.)
Inspiration: Wait until you try this yarn! It is
unbelievably soft and nice to knit with – I can’t decide if it feels like suede
or what exactly, but it makes my fingers “sing”. Infant and toddler socks are a
breeze – and done in a flash!
Materials:
Yarn: Infant - Toddler sizes: 1 (1.5, 1.5) balls
Needles: Crystal Palace bamboo dpn in size 4 us (3.5 mm), or size
required for gauge.
Gauge: 6 stitches per inch (24sts/10 cm) over stockinette stitch.
Note 1: the heel & foot of the slipper could be
worked with #3US (3mm) needles for enhanced wear with an active toddler. The
resulting slipper will still feel remarkably soft both inside and out, but be
warned that I found it is a wee bit tight to knit enjoyably on #3 needles. My
gauge with #3 dpn was 5 spi [20 st/10 cm].
Infant – Toddler Slippers
Sizes: Infant (Toddler1, Toddler 2), about 6 months -3 yrs.
1. Cast On. With Puffin and #4 US dpn, cast on
28 (32, 36) st. Do not join.
2. Purl 1 row; join being careful not to twist. Place marker.
3. Ribbing. Work in k2, p2 rib for 2 -3 in (~5 – 7.5 cm) or
desired length from start.
The longer cuff will enable you to more readily fold over the top rib if
desired.
4. Divide for heel. The heel is worked over (½ + 2) st.
a. Knit 8 (9, 10); turn and p 16 (18, 20).
b. Place the remaining 12 (14, 16) sts on a holder for the instep.
5. Knitting the heel.
a. On the front side *(Sl-1, k 1) across. Turn.
b. On the back side, Sl the first st; purl across. Turn
c. Work these two rows until the heel is ¾ (1, 1.5) in [1.9, 2.54, 3.8 cm] from
start.
6. Turning the heel. Knit across 9 (10, 11) st; k2tog, k1, turn. Purl 5,
p2tog, p1, turn.
a. Front: sl-1, knit to 1 st before “gap”; k2tog, k1 turn.
b. Back: sl-1, purl to 1 st before “gap”; p2tog, p1 turn.
c. Continue working rows c and d until all sts are done. You should finish with
a purl row and be ready to knit.
7. Gusset Pickups. Knit across the heel st.
a. With a new needle, pick up & knit the slipped st going down the side of the
heel.
b. At the corner, before you get to the instep st, it is possible to pick up one
extra st. Do so, but put the st onto the front of the instep needle.
c. Knit all of the instep sts except the last one.
d. Before you pickup and knit along the other side of the heel, take the “corner
st” (between the instep needle and the sts to be picked up) and slip this st
onto the end of the instep needle. Now knit this picked-up st along with the
last instep st.
8. Gusset decreases. Your total stitch count is higher than the 28
(32, 36) you started with, with all of the extra st on the two heel needles. We
will remove these gradually, working alternately decrease and no-decrease
rounds.
a. Work 1 round with no stitch count change, knitting on needles 1 and 3, and
working in Double Moss st for the instep needle. (Note: the instep st will be
worked by alternating a k2, p2 round with a p2, k2 round until all the gusset
decreases are completed.)
b. Decrease round: On nd1, K across to the last 3 sts. Now K2tog,
k1. Ndl 2 is worked with no decreases in double moss (k2p2 for one round; p2k2
for the next). On ndl 3, k1, sl-1, k1, pass slip st over (psso); knit to end of
needle.
c. Plain round: Needles 1 and 3, knit all st; Needle 2, work in double moss st.
d. Continue alternating the plain and decrease rounds until you have returned to
your starting number of sts.
9. Foot. Once you have decreased down to your initial number of sts,
work all three needles as knit only. Continue knitting until foot is 2.75 (3,
3.25) in from back of heel (6.985, 7.62, 8.255 cm).
10. Toe. Begin toe decreases. These will consist of two rounds.
a. Decrease Round: Ndl 1, K to last 3 sts; k2tog, k1. Ndl 2, K1, Sl-1, K1, psso;
K to last 3 st; k2tog, k1. Ndl 3, K1, Sl-1, K1, psso. Knit to end of ndl.
b. Plain Round: Knit all st.
c. Continuing Toe: alternate the decrease and plain rounds until only ~20 sts
remain.
d. Final toe. Work decrease round to end (leave about 8 st remaining.)
e. Close toe. Cut yarn, leaving an ~6 in end. Using a crochet hook, pull the
yarn end through each st, 1 at a time, and drop them off the needle.
11. Finishing. Tuck in all ends. If you work them diagonally up 3 st and
down 3 st they rarely come untucked.
