Diamond in the Rough
Felted Bag

Merino Stripes + Fjord + Blippity

Designed, knit and felted by Terry L. Ross for Crystal Palace Yarns

An elegant diamond shape, enhanced with rustic fringe to create a bag that is a diamond in the rough.

Materials:
2 - 50 gr balls Crystal Palace Fjord  in #4106 Rosewood (Color A)
2 - 50 gr balls Crystal Palace
Merino Stripes in Color #60, "Grand Canyon" (Color B)
1 - 50 gr ball Crystal Palace Blippity in #436 Chocolate Almonds
1
Crystal Palace Bamboo or DAISY Needles  U.S. size #11 (8.0 mm) 26" or 29" circular needle
Purchased purse handles and closure hardware (if desired)

Gauge: 3½ stitches per inch in stockinette stitch using Fjord.

Finished size:
Main body is 17" square before felting.
Finished bag is 10" square after felting, before top flap is folded over.

Techniques: The body of this purse is knit in garter stitch (K all rows) as two mitered squares, which are then sewn together and turned for a diamond shape. The top sides are finished with a knitted-on and folded-over binding, and the edges of the flap are created with an interesting combination of binding off with knitted-on I-cords.

Abbreviations: K, Knit; P, Purl; K2tog, Knit two stitches together; SSK, Slip one stitch knit-wise, slip another stitch knit-wise, insert the left hand
needle into the front of the two slipped stitches and knit them together; KFB, Knit into the front and the back of the same stitch to make one increase; RS, Right side; WS, Wrong side; PM, Place marker

Body of bag: (make 2)
With Color A, cast on 84 stitches as follows: Cast on 42, PM, cast on 42.
*Row 1: Knit
Row 2: Knit to two stitches before the marker, SSK, pass marker, K2tog, knit to the end of the row and turn.*
Repeat rows 1 and 2, changing yarns as follows:
At Row 6, change to Color B plus one strand of Blippity and work Rows 6 and 7
with the two yarns.
At Row 8, drop the Blippity and continue knitting with one strand of Color B.
Add in one strand of Blippity and knit 2 rows on the following rows:
20; 34; 48; 62; and 76, otherwise knit with only one strand of Color B.
When there are only two stitches left on the needle, knit them together, cut the yarn, and pull the tail through the last stitch on the needle.
Weave in the ends.
Make another square the same as the first.

Finishing:
Place the two knitted squares wrong sides together and turn them so that the Color A corner is at the bottom. Seam the two squares together along the two bottom edges.
Measure 10" from each bottom side corner up toward the top corner and mark.
Holding the two squares wrong sides together, pick up 28 stitches to the marker through both thicknesses and then knit four rows of garter stitch. Bind off, leave a 30" yarn tail. Fold the knitted binding in half to the back and use the yarn tail to seam the bound off edge to the purl bump created by the picked up stitch.
Repeat for the other side.
Fold down the unfinished top of the bag and hold it so that the right side (outside) of the flap faces you.
At the right hand edge, begin picking up stitches.
Pick up 25 stitches to the point of the flap, then continue picking up 25 more
stitches to the other side edge of the flap. 50 stitches picked up.
Row 1: Turn and work back across the picked up stitches as follows: K24,
KFB, KFB, K24 (52 stitches)
Row 2: Knit
Row 3: K25, KFB, KFB, K25 (54 stitches)

Begin Fringed Bind Off: K1, *Cast on 10, turn work, bind off 10, turn work,
slip 1 stitch to the right hand needle, pull cord to the front between the needles, knit one stitch from the left hand needle, pass the first right hand needle stitch over it to bind it off.* Repeat the instructions between the asterisks until all flap stitches are bound off.
Repeat for the other side flap. There should be one I-cord created for each stitch along the flap edges, or 54 on each flap.
On each side of the bag, where the two flaps join with the side bindings, secure the three bindings together with a few stitches to create a continuous line.
Felt the bag using your preferred method and shape to dry.
Apply purchased purse handles, and closure hardware, if desired.
