Scrunchie Bag
Knit in Party Ribbon
Designed and knit by Terry L. Ross for
Crystal Palace Yarns
This bag is
deceptively simple to knit and even more fun to carry – and exceptionally
roomy. A long rectangle is folded lengthwise and then scrunched onto handles
and secured with I-cord that is woven through knit-in eyelets.
The unique handle style is simply a new twist on an old
handle . . . well, not exactly a twist, more of a “flip it upside down and
use it that way” kind of thing. You never know what you’ll come up with when
you think about using traditional things in non-traditional ways.

the bag to the handles. The rectangle will be worked in garter st.

K three more rows. After working Row 208, bind off all sts.
I-cord Drawstrings:
Work I-cord on 5 sts to a
length of 18" and then work a fringed bind off as follows:
K1, *CO 12, turn and BO 13* until all five sts have been bound off and
5 fringe cords have been made. Cut the yarn and pull the tail through the
last loop, using the tail to tighten any sts, if necessary. Make 4
cords, then sew them to the bound off edge, RS facing, so that they are
centered and will fall across the 2 inner eyelets on each end. These will be
used to weave in and out of the eyelets and meet in the middle of the bag to
scrunch the bag around the handle.
Finishing:
Fold the rectangle in half
lengthwise, wrong sides together, and seam 6" of each end from the bottom
fold toward the opening. Leave the rest of the ends opened for ease in
accessing purse contents. Fold the eyelet edges over the handle toward the
inside and secure by weaving each of the 4 I-cords so that they both
emerge from the center set of eyelets. Since there are 11 sets of eyelets,
the 6th set will be the center set. Start the weaving by going in from
outside to inside on the first set, the out the second, in the third, and so
on, coming out the 6th, and vice versa from 11 to 6 on the other end. Do the
same on the other side. Cinch the top of the bag and tie to secure.
How to adapt the pattern to fit a different size handle:
The pattern is written to fit a 12"
handle surface, and would still work for up to 16".
The length of the rectangle is calculated on a 3 to 1 ratio. So, to cover
12" of handle surface, 36" is knitted and then gathered. If you choose a
handle that has more than 16" of surface to cover, I recommend that you
K
the length of the rectangle to 3 times 18", or 54". Additional eyelet rows
would be needed as well, every 20 rows, and the striping sequence would need
to be adjusted as well, either by adding more rows to the five stripes
outlined, or by adding more stripes to the sequence.
