Deco-Stardust + Whisper
Poncho
- easy poncho to knit
Deco-Stardust is a new ribbon yarn,
arriving in December 2004 - it's 55% soft metallic fiber with wonderful colors and gleaming
highlights. We combine it here with Whisper microfiber eyelash in an
easy, quick asymmetrical poncho.
Materials:
Deco-Stardust ribbon, 2-50
gr balls: 1- #4438 lime glow (A), 1-#4002 soft aqua metallic fiber(B) (or use both balls in one color)
Whisper: 2-50 gr. balls #9262,
seven seas print
Crystal Palace Bamboo 26" circular size 17 needles
Cast on 36 sts with Whisper and Deco-Stardust color A (both yarns held
together).
Knit 3 rows [garter st]
With just Deco-Stardust A work Open Stitch as follows:
row 1. K1* YO (yarn over = one wrap around needle), K2tog* repeat between
stars to last st, K1
row 2. Knit
Repeat these two rows twice more.
[This forms the open section seen on the shoulder in the 3rd
photo from the top at the right.]
**
Add Whisper back and knit with yarns held double: K 4 rows
Work Open St rows 1-2 with yarns held double one time.
K6 rows
Work Open St rows 1-2 with just Deco-Stardust alone.
**
Repeat between the **s.
Vary the K6 rows from 4 to 8 rows randomly between working the Open St rows or
stay with K4 and K6 as you choose.
[Note: The poncho in the photo had randomly different numbers of
rows from 4 to 8 knit between the Open St. sections.]
If you are using 2 different colors of Deco-Stardust as shown in the photos,
change to color A when the first ball runs out. One side of your poncho will
show with aqua metallic fiber, the other with pale blue.
When you are nearly out of yarn (you will likely have a little Whisper left
over at the end of knitting), end with 2-4 rows of garter st. until yarn is
gone.
Cast off loosely, it's OK to cast off using Whisper alone if you have used up
all the Deco-Stardust.
Size of knit piece will be approx. 16" wide by 42-44" long depending on your
gauge.
If you would like a larger, looser st poncho - follow these same directions,
but use size 19 needles.
Sew your poncho together using the diagram below.
Assembly:
Lay your rectangle out flat.
I used doubled Whisper and a large eyed tapestry needle to sew the shoulder
seam.
Seeing the diagram below, sew the 16" end to the side as
shown at X and Z. The beginning cast on edge with the 3 rows of Open St are at
the end turned to sew as shown in the diagram.
The knit piece will be quite stretchy, you may want to
pin the end before sewing.
