Introduction: Hats!! You only have to knit one;
they're fun, fast, and show off pretty yarns very well! The Dragon Ribs pattern
uses purl rnds and k rnds to best showcase your fave yarn colors.
This hat has more size variations, crown/top variations, & different sizes
Abbreviations: CO: cast on; dec: decrease; K: knit;
K2tog: knit 2 sts together; P: purl; rem: remain(ing); rep: repeat; st(s):
stitch(es); St st: stockinette st, knit every round; rnd: round; SSK, slip two
stitches from left to right needle, one-at-a-time. Insert tip of left needle
into these two sts and knit them (Dec of 1); SKP, slip one st from left to rt
needle, K next st, pass SL-st over the K st (dec of 1).
size 10 US Crystal Palace 16" Bamboo Circular needle or size needed to obtain
gauge. #9 dpn for crown of hat
(needles for crown should be 1-2 sizes smaller for a neater effect).
[Note: to make extra large size for man's head, use one size larger
needles for body of hat.]
Gauge: 3.5 sts/inch in St st
Note: Be sure to check gauge on a swatch, we hear some
knitters are needing to use 10.5 needles to get gauge.
Chunky Mochi 2 - 50 g balls of color desired.
Color shown is #801, intense rainbow
Size: adult's large ~ 22 in head circumference
Cast-On: With #9 16" circular needle and MC, CO 82 sts.
Join, being careful not to twist.
Place marker to indicate beginning of round
1. K every round until hat is ~1 in from cast on edge.
2. P 3 rnds
3. K 5 rnds
4. P 1 rnd
5. K 3 rnds
6. P 1 rnd, K 1 rnd, P 1 rnd.
7. K 3 rnds
Cont alternating K and P rounds, using Fibonacci numbers 1, 2,
3, 5 until the hat is ~ 6 in from cast on edge, or desired length. (6 in allows
the hat to cover the ears)
Crown Shaping - change to dpn as
soon as necessary to avoid stretching the hat on the circular needles as st
Prep rnd: *(K39, K2tog) twice;
now 80 sts.
Marker placement & 1st Dec rnd:
The 1st marker (end/beginning of round) is already in place
*(K2tog, K6, K2tog, place marker), repeat around. K2 rnds
Dec Rnd 2: *(K2tog, K4, K2tog),
repeat around, K2 rnds
Dec Rnd 3: *(K2tog, K2, K2tog),
repeat around; K1 rnd
Dec Rnd 4: *(K2tog, K2tog),
Dec Rnd 5: *K2tog around.
Cut yarn, leaving an ~ 8 in end.
With a crochet hook or tapestry needle, draw yarn through each
loop on needle and drop off. Pull snugly.
Work all ends in on reverse side so they don't' show. A crochet hook does this
