A Free Cowl Pattern that uses only 1 ball of Mini Mochi
designed & Knit by Laura Andersson See all the Mini
Mochi colors here. Level: Advanced Beginner-Intermediate Introduction: Cowls are a lovely accessory, for almost
anything you wear. As well, they can be quick to make, and are splendid gifts.
This design is called "Topsy Turvy" as you can wear it with either side up at the
top, effectively giving your self two cowls in one knit. It makes a lovely
sampler project since it has 3 different stitch pattern areas. Materials . Gauge: 6.5 sts/inch in St st Abbreviations: beg: begin(ning); bor/eor: beg of/end of
round; CO: cast on; cont: continue; dec: decrease; K: knit; K2tog: knit 2 sts
together; P: purl; rem: remain(ing); PM: place marker; rep: repeat; rnd: round;
st(s): stitch(es); St st: stockinette st = K every rnd;
Note: There will be a KAL (Knit-a-long) in this cowl
pattern
starting on Ravelry in mid-October 2010. It's free to join in.

Yarn: Crystal
Palace Mini-Mochi 1 - 50 g ball of color desired;
Color shown is #304, "Bodega Bay"
Needles: Crystal Palace 16" Bamboo Circular needle size 7 US or size
needed to obtain gauge.
Notions: stitch markers or contrasting loops of yarn
M1: make 1 stitch by lifting the bar between the 1st st on the right &
left-hand needles. Place this bar onto the front of the left needle, and knit
it.
M2: as for M1, make 1 st and knit it; then make a 2nd st.
SSK: slip 2 sts from left to right needle, one-at-a-time. Insert tip of left
needle into these 2 sts and K them (dec of 1);
SKP: slip one st from left to rt needle, K next st, pass SL-st over K st (dec of
1).
Size: teen/adult, 17" neck circumference
Cast-On: With 16" circ needle, CO 126 sts. Join, being
careful not to twist. PM to indicate beg of rnd
1. P 1 rnd, placing markers, as follows (first marker for eor/bor
is already present):
*(P18, PM) rep around.
2. K 1 rnd
3. P 1 rnd
4. Begin Pattern A
Pattern A
Rnd 1:*[(k2tog)x3, (yo, k1) x6,
(k2tog)x3], slip marker, repeat around.
Rnds 2 & 3: k all sts
Rnd 4: p all sts.
Rep these 4 rnds of Pattern A until cowl is approx. 2.75" from CO edge, measuring on
longest part of scallop. End after completion of rnd 4.
Pattern B: K3-P3 rib around, for 1.25"
Pattern C1
Rnd 1: *[k2tog, K6, M1, K2, M1, K6,
ssk], repeat around.
Rnds 2 & 3: K
Rep these 3 rnds until Patt C1 is approx. 2" from its start.
Pattern C2 (optional change to
make pattern have deeper waves, or
continue in C1)
Rnd 1: *[(k2tog)x2, k4, M2, K2, M2, K4, (ssk) x2] around
Rnds 2 & 3: K
Rep these 3 rnds of C2 until the cowl is approx. 3" from end of Pattern B section
At end of C section:
End with 2 rnds of garter st (P 1 rnd, K 1 rnd)
Change to needles one size larger to be sure to bind off
loosely in purl. If you don't have a larger needle handy to use for bind off,
just think LOOSEly as you bind off to leave a soft, stretchy edge.
Cut yarn, leaving an approx. 8" end.
Finishing:
With a crochet hook or tapestry needle, draw yarn through loop on needle. Pull snugly.
Work ends in on reverse side so they don't show. A crochet hook does this
very rapidly.
Rinse gently in lukewarm water, and lay flat to dry.
