Crystal Palace Bamboo Needles
Size 9 – 16”, 26” and 32” circular needles
Size 9 straight needles
4 stitch holders and stitch markers
Gauge: 4 sts = 1” in garter stitch
Abbreviations: BO - bind off; CO - cast on; Bet –
between; MC - main color; CC - contrasting color; K - knit; P - purl; PU - pick
up; SSK: sl 2 sts, one at a time, from left to right needle; then insert left
needle into front of these 2 sts and K them together; RS - right side; WS -
wrong side
Star Stitch: Knit next 3 sts, pass first st over second
and third sts.
Note: If the vest is begin made in one color,
disregard directions to change colors. [Some pattern
editing done October 15, 2008]
Bottom band: For all sizes, with MC CO 16 sts. K 1 row.
K 2 rows CC. K 2 rows MC. Cont alternating 2 rows CC and MC until 145 (161, 175,
191) ridges MC have been worked. BO loosely. Do not cut yarn. Leaving last loop
on needle, turn and PU one st in each ditch between garter ridges across bottom
of strip, PU 1 (0, 1, 0) st in cast-on edge: 146 (161, 176, 191) sts. K 3 rows.
BO loosely on right side. Finish off.
Using MC, PU sts as for bottom band across top of border: 146
(161, 176, 191) sts.
Continue as follows:
With MC, K10, place on st holder, K to last 10 sts, K10.
Next row: K10, place on st holder, K to end.
Begin pattern:
Row 1 MC Purl (WS) 3 CC Purl
Row 2 MC K2, (yo, star st), to last st, K1. 4 CC K1, (star st, yo), to
last 2 sts,.K2
Repeat these 4 rows until piece measures 12 (13, 14, 15) inches (or desired
length) from bottom edge to underarm. End by working row 1 (a MC wrong side
row).
Dividing row:
With MC, K2 (yo, star) 5 (6, 7, 8) times, K1, (right front) -- P
15 (18, 21, 24), place on holder -- K2, (yo, star) 19 (20, 21, 22) times, K1,
(back) -- P15 (18, 21, 24), place on holder -- K2 (yo, star) 5 (6, 7, 8) times,
K1, place marker (left front).
Next row: Using size 9 straight needles and CC, purl
across sts of left front. Leave remaining sts on circular needle, using it as a
holder.

Front Bands: Sl sts from holders
to size 9 needle. Sl 1, K to end of row. Repeat this row until front band is
long enough when slightly stretched to sew to front edges and over shoulder seam
to meet bound-off back neck edge. Bind off sts of band and sew in place (do not
sew ends of bands together). Repeat for right band.

Armhole finishing: Using size 9 - 24" circular needle, beginning at
shoulder seam, PU and K 40 (40, 44, 44) sts along arm edge, K across sts on holder at
bottom of arm opening, PU and K 40 (40, 44, 44) sts along second arm edge. Do not turn.
P 1 round. Bind off. Repeat for second armhole.
