Fjord Boot Socks
knit with 100% wool
Designed and Knit by Nancy Wild of Warm & Wild Designs
for Crystal Palace Yarns

This is a Great boot sock for hiking. It has a simple twining technique for the stripes and an Eye of Partridge heel for longer wear. This would be a great sock to learn twining and is a fast knit for those quick gifts that are needed through out the year.

Materials:
2 - 50 gr balls - MC Crystal Palace Fjord 100% wool (here #4108 "vine green")
1 - 50 gr ball - CC Crystal Palace Fjord  (here #9809 -"fall herbs")
1 Set US Size 3 (3.25mm)
Crystal Palace Bamboo Double Point needles
Tapestry Needle for closing the toe and weaving in the ends.

Gauge:
6.5 Sts /in and 5.5 rows/in; 26 Sts/10 cm and 22 rows/10 cm

Size: Ladies Med-Lg
To make smaller use a size 2 (2.75mm) needle.
For a man’s large use a size 4 (3.5mm) needle.

Directions:
Using the backward loop cast on and the CC yarn, cast on 64 sts. Be careful not to twist the sts when you join and work 2 inches of K 2, P 2 rib. Switch to the MC yarn, but DO NOT break the CC yarn. Carry the yarn down the cuff of the sock to eliminate ends to weave in at the end of the sock.

Round 1-5: *With MC K5 rounds of St st. (K All Sts)
Round 6-8: Bring CC yarn to the front of work, K1 MC, P 1 CC around. When finished with round 8 bring CC to the back of work to wait for the next time you need it.* repeat these 8 rounds 3 more times.
Work 5 rounds in St st before starting heel flap.

Heel Flap:
With CC work Eye of Partridge Heel flap leaving the MC yarn at the end of the instep sts. The MC yarn will be picked up and used for the foot of the sock starting at the edge of the instep sts.

Eye-of-Partridge Heel Flap:
Note: All slipped stitches are slipped purl wise.
Row 1: Slip the first stitch, K1, slip 1 across, ending with K1.
Row 2: Slip the first stitch, P across.
Row 3: Slip the first two stitches, K1, slip 1 across, ending with slip 1.
Row 4: P across.
Repeat these 4 rows until you have 2 inches or the distance from your ankle bone to the floor.
End after completing a Purl row.
Heel turn and Decrease:
Row 1: SL 1, K18, K2tog, turn.
Row 2: SL 1, P6, P2tog, Turn.
Row 3: SL 1, K6, K2tog, Turn.
Repeat rows 2&3 until you have worked the entire heel flap.
Pick up and Knit 12 Sts on the side of the heel flap (these will be the Slip Stitch loops), K across the instep Sts, pick up and K 12 Sts from the side of the heel flap.
Cut CC yarn leaving a tail long enough to weave in after completion.

Gusset:
With MC waiting at the end of the Instep Sts you will pick up and K 1 St for every Slipped St on the side of the heel flap. Then K across half of the sts from the heel turn. K across the other half other heel turn sts and pick up and K 1 st for every slipped st on the side of the heel flap.
Round 1: K across the instep sts, sl 1, and K1 PSSO (pass slipped stitch over K st) decrease made, K across ½ of the heel sts, K to within the last 2 sts of the 2nd heel needle and then K2tog.
Round 2: K all sts.
Repeat these 2 rounds until you are back to the original st count of 64. Now work the foot of the sock to the desired length minus 1-½ inches.

Toe Decreases:
The toe is worked in CC if you have enough of your left over yarn or you can do in MC if you are short on CC color yarn.
Round 1, 4, 7, 9 and 11: K to within last 2 sts of needle 1 and K2tog, needle 2: sl 1, K1, PSSO, knit to within 2 sts of end of needle and K2tog. Needle 3: SL 1, K1, PSSO K to end.
Round 2, 3, 5, 6, 8 and 10: Knit around.
Round 12 and all remaining rounds are the same as round 1 until you have 16 stitches total remaining. Cut yarn and Kitchener Stitch the toe closed. Weave in all ends.
