Yarns
Materials:
1 50 gr. ball Crystal Palace
Puffin (MC)#0200 "dotty pinks"
1 50 gr. ball of Crystal Palace
Puffin (CC) #0101 "rosewater"
Size 4 (5) 16 inch Crystal Palace Bamboo Needle
Size 4 (5) Crystal Palace Star double point needles
Tapestry Needle for weaving in ends
6 inch piece of 14 inch satin ribbon for a stitch holder
Gauge:
4.5 (4) Sts per inch on size 4 (5) needles
Size:
Newborn (1 year)
Using a size larger needles enlarges pattern,
you could go to a size 6 needle for one more size.
Loop stitch:
Rnd 1:*Bring yarn forward and wrap around thumb, bring
yarn to back of needles, K in front of next stitch and k in back of same st,
bind off one stitch by bring first loop over second loop.*
Repeat this process to end of the round.
Rnd 2: Knit 1 round.
Abbreviations:
K= knit; P= Purl; PM= Place Marker; St/s= Stitch/es; K2tog= Knit
2 Sts together
SSK= Slip as if to Knit, Slip as if to knit, Slide these two sts back onto left
needle and K2tog
Kfb- Knit in front and back of Stitch (increase made)
Hat Directions:
With MC cast 60 Sts onto the 16 inch circular needles. Join being
careful not to twist the Sts. K 10 rounds with MC. Work 1 repeat of loop St
Pattern with CC then 1 repeat of MC and the last repeat is in CC. Switch to MC
and K 16 rounds. Switch to CC and P 2 rounds.
Decrease rounds:
At this point you will want to switch to the double point needles.
Round 1: *K2tog, K 6, SSK* repeat around. (48 Sts)
Next 2 rounds: Knit
Round 4: *K2tog, K 4, SSK* repeat around. (36 Sts)
Next 2 rounds: Knit
Round 7: *K2tog, K 2, SSK* repeat around. (24 Sts)
Next 2 rounds: Knit
Round 10: *K2tog, SSK* repeat around. (12 Sts)
Next 2 Rounds: Knit
Last round: K2tog around, cut tail and bring through all of the remaining Sts.
Pull tail to inside, pull tight and secure then weave in the tails.
When you have finished weaving in the tails go through and pull the loops tight
for an even look in the inside and a more prominent loop on the out side if the
hat.
Mittens:
NOTE: For newborn omit the thumb and put a tie or elastic
in the cuff to hold the mitten on.
With Double Point needles cast on 28 Sts (7 Sts on 4 needles and working with
the 5th) using MC. Join being careful not to twist the Sts.
K 6 rounds in MC then switch to CC and work 1 repeat of the Loop St Pattern.
Switch to MC and work 2 rounds.
Thumb Gusset:
Kfb, Kfb, K around. (30 Sts)
K 1 round.
Kfb, K 2, Kfb, K around. (32 Sts)
K 1 round.
Kfb, K 4, Kfb, K around. (34 Sts)
K 1 round.
Kfb, K 6, Kfb, K around. (36 Sts)
K 1 round.
K across thumb Sts and place on ribbon until the rest of the mitten is done.
Knit to the end of the round.
Using the backward loop cast on method cast on 2 Sts where thumb sts are on
hold. K to end of round.(28 sts for hand)
Note: when working the sts cast on make sure to keep the twist in the sts
as you knit to prevent holes.
K 9 rounds then you will star the decrease rounds.
Decrease Rounds:
Round 1: *K 2, K2tog*, around. (21 Sts)
Round 2 & 3: K around.
Round 4: *K 1, K2tog*, Around. (14 Sts)
Round 5 & 6: K around.
Round 7: K2tog around. Cut MC, pull through all sts, bring to inside of work and
weave in ends.
Thumb:
Using 3 needles put 4 Sts from ribbon on first two needles. Pick up 4 sts under
thumb where you cast on 2 sts.
K 6 rounds using CC. (or to desired length)
K2tog around. Cut yarn and pull through all sts. Bring tail to inside and weave
in ends.
Make the second Mitten for that special little one in your life.
