Sausalito Lace Trimmed Socks

Free Knit Sock Pattern

Description:  These socks feature a basic 2 x 2 rib with heel stitch heel flap and side gusset. The socks are finished off with an elegant crocheted edge. (You may leave off the finished edging if desired.)

Level:  Intermediate (with some crochet for edging)
Size:  Woman's M

Materials:
2 - 50g balls Crystal Palace Yarns Sausalito, 198 yds each (shown in 8308 "Monet")
Crystal Palace Bamboo 6" Double-Pointed Needles
in US size 1.5 (2.5 mm), or size needed for gauge
Crystal Palace Bamboo Crochet Hook
in size D (3.25 mm)
Yarn sewing needle

Gauge: 6.25 st per inch in St st

Abbreviations: ch- chain; dc- double crochet; k- knit; p- purl; k2tog or p2tog- knit or purl 2 stitches together as if they were one st; psso- pass slip stitch over stitch just knitted; rep- repeat; sc- single crochet; sl- slip one st from left hand needle to right hand needle without knitting it; St st- Stockinette stitch (knit every round when working the piece in the round and k1 row, p1 row when working a straight piece); sts- stitches; trc- treble crochet

Instructions:  (make 2)
Cuff and Leg:
Loosely cast on 60 st on 3 needles. Join, being careful not to twist. Begin working in the rnd in K2, P2 rib for 2.5 inches. Knit next 2 inches in St st. (Piece should measure total of 4.5 inches.)
Heel:
Divide for heel as follows: Knit next 15 sts, put remaining sts (instep) on next needle. Turn and p 15 sts, with same needle, purl 15 more from next needle. Put remaining sts on 2 needles (You will have 30 sts for heel and 30 sts for the instep.) 
Continue to work back and forth over heel sts only.
Row 1:
*Sl 1, k1, rep from * across.
Row 2:
Sl 1, P remaining sts.
Repeat these 2 rows until heel tab measures 2.25 inches.

Turn Heel:

Row 1:  With knit side facing, K17, K2tog, k1, turn.
Row 2:  Sl 1, P5, P2tog, P1, turn.
Row 3:  Sl 1, K6, K2tog, K1, turn.
Row 4:  Sl 1, P7, P2tog, P1, turn.
Row 5:  Sl 1, K8, K2tog, K1, turn.
Row 6:  Sl 1, P9, P2tog, P1, turn.
Row 7:  Sl 1, K10, K2tog, K1, turn.
Row 8:  Sl 1, P11, P2tog, P1, turn.
Row 9:  Sl 1, K12, K2tog, K1, turn.
Row 10:  Sl 1, P13, P2tog, P1, turn.
Row 11:
  Sl 1, K14, K2tog, K1, turn.
Row 12:
  Sl 1, P15, P2tog, P1, turn.
Row 13:
  Sl, K16, K2tog, K1, turn.
Row 14:
  Sl 1, P17, P2tog, P1, turn.
Row 15:
  Sl 1, K18.

Gusset:
With same needle pick up 19 sts along left edge of heel tab. With another needle k2, p2 rib across the next two (instep) needles. With a third needle, pick up 19 sts along right edge of heel tab, continue with same needle and k 9 sts off of first needle. You will have 28 sts on left heel needle, 30 sts of k2, p2 rib on instep needle and 28 sts on right heel needle.  Begin working in the rnd again.
Decrease Rnd: With Left Heel Needle: K within 3 st of needle, k2tog, k1. With Instep Needle: K2, P2 across. Right Heel Needle: K1, Sl 1, K1, psso, k remainder of sts.
Next row:
Work even, keeping instep sts in k2, p2 rib.
Repeat these 2 rows until 15 sts remain on each of the heel needles.
Work in established pattern until sock is 1.25 inches shorter than desired length.

Toe:

Decrease Rnd 1: With Left Heel Needle: K within 3 st of needle, k2tog, k1. With Instep Needle: K1, Sl 1, K1, psso, K within 3 st of needle, k2tog, k1. With Right Heel Needle: K1, Sl 1, K1, psso, k remainder of sts.
Row 2:
K around.
Repeat these 2 rows a total of 6 times. Continue knitting Left Heel stitches onto Right Heel needle. You should have 14 st on each needle.
Kitchener st the seam.

Crocheted Lace Trim: (optional)
Using size D hook and starting at center back with inside of sock facing you, place a sc. Ch 5, *dc in top of next rib, ch 1, dc in next ditch, ch 1.
Repeat from * around (30 dc) join into 3rd st of beginning ch.
Rnd 2:
Sc in each in same sp, *sc in next sp, sc in top of dc. Repeat from * around. Do not join.
Rnd 3
: *Sc in top of next sc, ch 3, skip next sc. Repeat from * around for a total of 28 ch 3 counting the last ch 3. Do not join.
Rnd 4:
 Skipping over 2 sc, *(2 dc, ch3, 2trc, ch3, 2dc) in next sp, ch 3, skip next ch3 sp, sc in next ch3, ch3, skip next ch3 sp. Repeat from * for a total of 7 clusters. Do not join.
Rnd 5:
 Skip next ch 3 sp, *Sc ch3 in next 2 ch 3 sp. Over top of cluster, (ch 7, sl st into 4th ch from hook, ch3, sc in next ch3 sp). Ch3, sc in next ch 3 sp, ch 3, sc in top of next sc, ch 3.  Rep from * 6 more times. End by joining into the center sc in between the first and last cluster.

Weave in all ends.
