Description:  These stylish, half-calf socks feature simple leg shaping, reinforced heel-stitch turned heel, gusset and toe decreases.  Choose tonal colors or colors with contrast to suit your style; the extensive Allegro Lace range of heathered colors offers many color options.

Level: Intermediate (turning the heel, picking up stitches, working in the round, k2tog and ssk decreases)

Size:  Woman's M (L) - 8 (9)" circumference at foot and ankle

Materials: 

Gauge:  8 sts = 1" in St st

Abbreviations:  CC- contrasting color; CO - cast-on; dpn- double-pointed needle; k- knit; k2tog- knit 2 sts together; MC- main color; p- purl; rnd(s)- round(s); ssk- slip one st knitwise, then slip the next st knitwise, then put those 2 sts back on the other needle and knit them together (decreases one st); st(s)- stitch(es)

 

INSTRUCTIONS

With MC, CO 72 (80) sts over 4 dpn’s.  Join, being careful not to twist sts.  Knit even in St st for 6 rnds. Work k2 x p2 rib for 6 rnds..

 

Change to CC and knit 6 rnds.

Change to MC and knit 6 rnds.

Change to CC and knit 5 rnds.

Next Rnd (with CC):  *K16 (18), k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd.  [68 (76) sts}

Change to MC and knit 6 rnds.

Change to CC and knit 6 rnds.

Change to MC and knit 6 rnds.

Change to CC and knit 5 rnds.

Next Rnd (with CC):  *K15 (17), k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd.  [64 (72) sts]

Change to MC and knit 6 rnds.

Change to CC and knit 6 rnds.

 

Repeat the last 12 rnds, 3 more times (no decreasing).  Piece should measure ~8" from cast-on edge.

 

With MC, knit 2 rnds.

 

Next Rnd:  K16 (18), pm, k32 (36), pm.  Begin heel flap.

 

Begin Heel Flap (worked back and forth on first 32 (36) sts with MC only):

Row 1 (RS): (Sl 1, k1) 16 (18) times, turn.

Row 2 (WS):  Sl 1, p31 (35), turn.

Repeat these two rows 15 (17) more times.  [32 (36) rows total]. 

Work one more Row 1.

 

Next Row:  Sl 1, p18 (20), p2tog, p1, turn.

Next Row:  Sl 1, k7, ssk, k1, turn.

Next Row:  Sl 1, p8, p2tog, p1, turn.

Next Row:  Sl 1, k9, ssk, k1, turn.

Next Row:  Sl 1, p10, p2tog, p1, turn.

 

Continue working one more st each row until all stitches have been used worked, ending on a WS row.  Turn.  [20 (22) sts]

 

Begin Heel Gusset:

Now you will go back to knitting in the rnd.

 

Next Rnd:  With MC, knit 20 (22) sts; PU and knit 16 (18) sts along heel flap edge, pu 1 st in gap between gusset & instep, knit across 32 (36) in-step sts, pu 1 st in gap between gusset & instep, pu and knit 16 (18) sts along heel flap edge.  [86 (96) sts] 

Knit even for 10 (11) sts.  PM to mark beg of rnd.

 

Divide the sts on the needles as such:

DPN #1: Next 27 (30) sts  [This should include the 10 (11) heel sts, 16 (18) pu sts & the gap st.]

DPN #2: Next 16 (18) sts.  (Half of the instep sts)

DPN #3: Last 16 (18) sts.  (Half of the instep sts)

DPN #4: First 27 (33) sts.  [This should include the gap st, 16 (18) pu sts & 10 (11) heel sts.]

 

Gusset:

Gusset Rnd 1:  Knit one rnd even.

Gusset Rnd 2:  K to 3 sts before end of DPN #1, k2tog, k1, k across to end od DPN #3, k1 ssk, k to end.

Change to CC.

Repeat Gusset 1.

Repeat Gusset 2.

 

Repeat Gusset Rnds 1 & 2 until you have 64 (72) sts left, alternating between MC and CC every 6 rnds.  [16 (18) sts on each DPN]

 

Continue to work even in St st, alternating as established between MC and CC every 6 rnds, until piece measures ~ 2 ¼ (2 ½)” less than desired length, ending with a full stripe of CC.  Break CC and join MC.

 

Begin Toe: (worked in MC only)

Rnd 1, 2 & 3:  Knit.

Rnd 4:  K to 3 sts before end of DPN #1, k2tog, k2, ssk, k to 3 sts before end of DPN #3, k2tog, k2, ssk, k to end of rnd.[60 (68) sts]

Rnd 5 & 6:  Knit one rnd even.

Rnd 7:  Repeat Rnd 4.  [56 (64) sts]

Rnd 8 & 9:  Knit one rnd even.

Row 10:  Repeat Rnd 4.  [52 (60) sts]

Rnds 11 & 12:  Knit one rnd even.

Rnd 13:  Repeat Rnd 4.  [48 (56) sts]

Rnd 14:  Knit one rnd even.

Rnd 15:  Repeat Rnd 4.  [44 (52) sts]

Rnd 16:  Knit one rnd even.

Rnd 17:  Repeat Rnd 4.  [40 (48) sts]

Rnd 18:  Knit one rnd even.

Rnd 19:  Repeat Rnd 4.  [36 (44) sts]

Rnd 20:  Knit one rnd even.

Rnd 21:  Repeat Rnd 4.  [32 (40) sts]

Rnd 22:  Knit one rnd even.

Rnd 23:  Repeat Rnd 4.  [28 (36) sts]

Rnd 24:  Repeat Rnd 4.  [24 (32) sts]

Rnd 25:  Repeat Rnd 4.  [20 (28) sts]

Rnd 26:  Repeat Rnd 4.  [16 (24) sts]

Rnd 27:  Repeat Rnd 4.  [12 (20) sts]

Rnd 28:  Repeat Rnd 4.  [8 (16) sts]

Rnd 29 (L size only):   Repeat Rnd 4.  [(12) sts]

Rnd 30 (L size only):   Repeat Rnd 4.   [(8) sts]

 

Cut yarn.  Thread tapestry needle and draw yarn through remaining 8 sts.
