Merino 5

Child's Team Pom-Pom Hat

Level:  Easy (working in the round, 3-needle bind-off)

Size:   ~17" circumference, to fit ages 3-6 yrs.


  • 1 ball each of Crystal Palace Merino 5 in MC & CC (shown in  5202 "Black" & 1011 "Team Orange")
  • Crystal Palace Bamboo 16" Circular Needle in US size 7 (or size needed for gauge)
  • 1 Double-Pointed or Single-Pointed Needle in  US size 7 (for 3-needle bind off)
  • Yarn sewing needle


Gauge:  5 sts=1"

Abbreviations:  BO- bind off; CO- cast on; dpn- double-pointed needles; k- knit; rnd- round; st(s)- stitch(es)



With MC and circular needles, CO 84 sts.  Join and begin working in the rnd, being careful not to twist.  Knit 12 rnds for cuff.


Change to CC.  Knit 2 rnds.

Change to MC.  Knit 2 rnds.


Repeat these 4 rnds 11 more times.  (Piece should measure ~9" with cuff unrolled.)


3-Needle Bind Off:

Hold hat flat so that both tips of circular needle are at the right-hand side of work. 

With a single-pointed or double-pointed needle - this will now be your working needle -  insert into first st on front needle tip, then insert into first st on back of needle tip and knit both sts tog. 

*Insert needle into next st on front tip, then into next st on back tip.  Knit these 2 sts tog.  Slip first st on working needle st over second st.  (1 st bound off)


Repeat from * until 1 st remains.. Draw yarn through this last st with sewing needle and fasten off.


Pom-Pom (make 2):

With CC, wrap yarn 50-60 times around 4 fingers.  Tie tightly in the center.  Cut apart loops and trip.  Sew a pom-pom on each corner of hat.


Weave in all ends.
