Crystal Palace Yarns - FREE PATTERN - Crochet

Mochi Plus

Coiled Hat

Designed by Cathy Campbell

Description:  This crocheted hat is accentuated by the beautiful slow-stripes of Mochi Plus.  The colors change by themselves.  Working in the back of the stitch pushes the line of V's forward, creating horizontal "coils" that are reminiscent of vertical knitted ribbing.

Level:  Easy (sc, hdc, sl st)

Size:  Adult Medium

Materials:

Gauge:  16 hdc=4" on larger hook

Abbreviations:  ch- chain; hdc- half double crochet; rep- repeat; rnd- round; sc- single crochet; sl st- slip stitch

INSTRUCTIONS

Ch 6.  Join to form a ring.

Rnd 1:  Work 8 sc's in ring.

Rnd 2:  Work 2 hdc's in each sc around.  [16 hdc]

Note: From Rnd 3 to end of piece, instead of working into the top of the previous row as is typical, work each hdc in back band behind st. This will push the V's in the front of the work to form the coil design.  (Click here to see a picture of this technique.)

Rnd 3:  Working each hdc in back band behind st of previous row, *Hdc in next hdc, work 2 hdc's in next hdc; rep from * around.  [24 hdc's]

Rnd 4:  *Hdc in each of next 2 hdc, work 2 hdc's in next hdc; rep from * around.  [32 hdc's]

Rnd 5:  *Hdc in each of next 3 hdc, work 2 hdc's in next hdc; rep from * around.  [40 hdc's]

Rnd 6:  *Hdc in each of next 4 hdc, work 2 hdc's in next hdc; rep from * around.  [48 hdc's]

Rnd 7:  *Hdc in each of next 5 hdc, work 2 hdc's in next hdc; rep from * around.  [56 hdc's]

Rnd 8:  *Hdc in each of next 6 hdc, work 2 hdc's in next hdc; rep from * around.  [64 hdc's]

Rnd 9:  *Hdc in each of next 7 hdc, work 2 hdc's in next hdc; rep from * around.  [72 hdc's]

Work even in hdc until piece measures 2" less than desired length.  Change to smaller hook and continue in hdc to desired length, working last rnd in sc rather than hdc.  Work 2 sl sts.  Fasten off and weave in ends.
