Twin Peaks Baby Hat

Description:  This baby hat is made entirely on the 12" Circular Short & Long Needles - no need for double points!  The bit of elastic adds extra fit.  The peaks are worked back and forth in short rows.  The seam is sewed up with Kitchener's stitch.

Level:  Intermediate (working in the round, short rows, Kitchener's stitch)

Size:  New born (12" circumference, unstretched)

Materials: 

Gauge:  6.75 sts=1 inch in St St

INSTRUCTIONS

CO 80 sts.  Place "beg of rnd" marker.  Join, being careful not to twist.  Work in St st (k every rnd) until piece measures 4".

 

Begin Increase:

Inc Rnd:  (k20, m1) 4 times.  [84 sts]

Work 3 rnds even in St st.

Inc Rnd:  (k21, m1) 4 times.  [88 sts]

Work 3 rnds even in St st.

Inc Rnd:  (k22, m1) 4 times.  [92 sts]

Work 3 rnds even in St st.

Inc Rnd:  (k23, m1) 4 times.  [96 sts]

Next Rnd:  K48, place 2nd marker ("middle marker"), k48.

 

Begin Peak Short Rows:

Short Row 1:  Knit to 7 stitches before the middle marker.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 2:  Purl to 7 stitches before the beg of rnd marker.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 3:  Knit to 12 stitches before middle marker.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 4:  Purl to 12 sts just before beg of rnd marker. Wrap and turn.

Short Row 5:  Knit to 16 stitches before middle marker.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 6:  Purl to 16 stitches before beg of rnd marker.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 7:  Knit to 19 sts before middle marker.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 8:  Purl to 19 sts before beg of rnd marker.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 9:  Knit to 21 sts before middle marker.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 10:  Purl to 21 sts before beg of rnd marker.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 11:  Knit to 22 sts before middle marker.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 12:  Purl to 22 sts before beg of rnd marker.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 13:  Knit to 7 sts before beg of rnd marker, making sure to knit any wraps tog with sts when you reach them.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 14:  Purl to 7 sts before middle marker.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 15:  Knit to 12 sts before beg of rnd marker.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 16:  Purl to 12 sts before middle marker.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 17:  Knit to 16 sts before beg of rnd marker.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 18:  Purl to 16 sts before middle marker.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 19:  Knit to 19 sts before beg of marker.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 20:  Purl to 19 sts before middle marker.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 21:  Knit to 21 sts before beg of marker.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 22:  Purl to 21 sts before middle marker.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 23:  Knit to 22 sts before beg of marker.  Wrap and turn.

Short Row 24:  Purl to 22 sts before middle marker.  Wrap and turn.

 

Knit to end of rnd, being sure to knit wraps and sts together as you reach them.  Do not turn.  Knit one rnd even, being sure to knit any remaining wraps and sts together when you reach them.

 

Kitchener's Stitch*

Cut yarn, leaving ~24" tail.  Work Kitchener's Stitch to sew up seam.  Fasten off and weave in ends.

Note:  When working Kitchener Stitch pull cord out when it gets too hard to work.

 

*Alternatively, instead of working the Kitchener's Stitch, you can bind off all stitches and sew up seam on inside of work.
