My Secret Garden Socks

Description:  A love of leaves and leaf patterns.  This sock pattern features a leaf-shaped lace motif with top leaf cuff.  Sausalito color 8119 "Tonga" is perfect for spring leaf colors.  Try it in 8455 "Coreopsis" for fall shades. 

Level:  Intermediate (sock construction, leaf lace motif)

Size:  Women's M (Shoe size 7-9)

Materials: 

  • 2 - 50 gr. balls Crystal Palace Yarns Sausalito (shown in #8119 "Tonga")
  • Crystal Palace Bamboo dpn #2 US (for cuff & leg) and #1 US for (foot), or needles required to obtain gauge.

Gauge:  9 sts=1” over St St on #1 US

Abbreviations:  beg = beginning; bo =bind off; co = cast on; dpn = double pointed needles; k = knit; k2tog = knit 2 stitches together; k2togtbl= knit 2 stitches together thru back loop; k3togtbl = knit 3 stitches together thru back loop; kfb = knit front and back (inc of 1 st made); p2tog = purl 2 stitches together; PM = place marker; p = purl; ssk = slip slip knit; sssk = slip slip slip knit; rnd = round; st(s) = stitch(es); YO = yarn over; pu = pick up 

(Note: unless stated otherwise, slip as to purl)

 

INSTRUCTIONS

Cuff of sock is knitted flat then joined together using the three-needle bind off. Sts are then picked up along the garter-stitch edge and sock is then knitted down from there on.

 

A. Top Edging Pattern:

Using a provisional cast on and larger dpn, CO 6 sts.

Row 1: K3, yo, k1, yo, k2, turn.

Row 2: P6, kfb, k1, turn.

Row 3: K2, p1, k2, yo, k1, yo, k3, turn.

Row 4: P8, kfb, k2, turn.

Row 5: K2, p2, k3, yo, k1, yo, k4, turn.

Row 6: P10, kfb, k3, turn.

Row 7: K2, p3, ssk, k5, k2togtbl, k1, turn.

Row 8: P8, kfb, p1, k3, turn.

Row 9: K2, p1, k1, p2, ssk, k3, k2togtbl, k1, turn.

Row 10: P6, kfb, k1, p1, k3, turn.

Row 11: K2, p1, k1, p3, ssk, k1, k2togtbl, k1, turn.

Row 12: P4, kfb, k2, p1, k3, turn.

Row 13: k2, p1, k1, p4, k3togtbl, k1, turn.

Row 14: P2tog, bo 3sts, k1, p1, k3, turn.

 

Repeat Cuff pattern 7 times, ending with row 14.

 

Leave the stitches on the ndl.  With a 2nd ndl, undo provisional cast-on and place the six sts onto 2nd ndl. Using the three-needle bind-off method, sew the two ends together wrong-side out. This creates a round cuff from which the stitches for the rest of the sock will be picked up.

 

B. Leg Pattern:

Pick up 72 sts evenly around garter-stitch edge of cuff.

Divide sts evenly so that there are 18 stitches on each of the four dpn. PM at cuff seam; K 1 rnd.

 

Leaf Motif:

Rnd 1: *(K10, k3tog, yo, k1, yo, p4), repeat from * around. 

Rnd 2 & all even rounds: *(K14, p4); repeat from * around.

Rnd 3: *(K8, k3tog, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, p4); repeat from * around.

Rnd 5: *(K6, k3tog, k2, yo, k1, yo, k2, p4); repeat from * around.

Rnd 7: *(K4, k3tog, k3, yo, k1, yo, k3, p4); repeat from * around.

Rnd 9: *(yo, k1, yo, sssk, k10, p4); repeat from * around.

Rnd 11: *(K1, yo, k1, yo, k1, sssk, k8, p4); repeat from * around.

Rnd 13: *(K2, yo, k1, yo, k2, sssk, k6, p4); repeat from * around.

Rnd 15: *(K3, yo, k1, yo, k3, sssk, k4, p4); repeat from * around.

Rnd 16: Repeat row 2.

 

Repeat Rnds 1-16 three times, or until leg is desired length, ending with rnd 16.

 

Heel:

Changing to smaller needles, with ndl #4, K sts from ndl #1, turn. These 36 sts are the heel sts.  Set aside remaining sts for instep.

 

Row 1: *(Sl1, P1) across.

Row 2: Sl1, K across.

Repeat these two rows until heel flap is 2.5 inches, or desired length; ending after completion of row 1.

 

Turning Heel:

Row 1: S1, k18, k2tog, k1, turn.

Row 2: S1, p3, p2tog, p1, turn.

Row 3: S1, K across to 1 st before gap; k2tog, k1, turn.

Row 4: S1, P across to 1 st before gap; p2tog, p1, turn.

 

Repeat Rows 3 & 4 until all sts are used (ending after completion of a P row)

 

Gusset and Instep:

With Ndl #1, k19, pu 23 stitches along the heel flap side. Ndls 2 & 3 -work pattern as established. Ndl 4 - pu 23 stitches along opposite side of heel flap, work 10 stitches from needle 1.  PM for beginning of rnd.

 

Rnd 1: Ndl1 - K across; Ndls 2 & 3 - pattern as established; Ndl 4 - K across.

Rnd 2: Ndl1 - K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1; Ndls 2 and 3 - pattern as established; Ndl 4 - K1, ssk, k across.

 

Repeat Rnds 1 and 2 until 18 stitches remain on each needle.

 

Foot:

Ndl1 - K across; Ndl2 - continue in pattern as established; Ndl3 - continue in pattern as established; Ndl4 - K across

 

Continue in this manner until foot of sock is approximately 2 in short of desired length (length to longest toe)

 

Toe:

Rnd 1: Ndl1 - K to 3 sts from end, now K2tog, k1; Ndl2 - K1, ssk, k to end; Ndl3 - K to 3 sts from end, k2tog, k1; Ndl4 - K 1, ssk, k to end.

Rnd 2: K around.

 

Repeat these 2 rnds until there are 10 sts on each needle. Then repeat rnd 1 an additional four times.

 

Finishing: Close toe using the Kitchner stitch. Weave in ends. Block if desired.
